FG Reach an Agreement with ASUU: ASUU to call Off Strike

With the recent ASUU indefinite strike, the Federal Government of Nigeria has reached an agreement with ASUU assuring students and all the sectors affected by indefinite strike of resuming their activities.

We can remember that ASUU began the indefinite strike since August 14, over unpaid arrears and demands for improved infrastructure in the universities.

The minister of Education, Adamu Adamu made this known to the public in Abuja at a reconciliation meeting with ASUU’s executive, officials of the Ministry of Education and other stakeholders.

The minister said-

I think we have already reached agreement on one and I hope we will be able to reach agreement on the other,” he said shortly after the meeting.

From the look of things, it seems that the strike would come to an end soon as the FG and ASUU have come to a one channel agreement. The FG are expected to release the sum of N220billion naira to the union before October, 2017 runs out.

Also according to Chris Ngige-

We also discussed the issue of university staff schools and coffers single account with a view to finding how the system could have room for funds for research grants that need to be autonomous from the government. We also talked about the issue of how the Federal Government could be involved in the management of state universities.

This meeting took hours to come to an agreement between the FG and ASUU after 12 hours, 30 minutes of a closed door meeting between FG delegate and ASUU in Abuja which proceeded from Thursday, September 7 by 1:38pm and ended 2:15 a.m. on Friday, September 8, 2017.

Indeed, it was a long and tough battle between the FG and ASUU to see that the issue on ground be treated and resolve.

Good luck as we keep our hopes up for the announcement from ASUU on resumption day, so that academic activities will once again continue moving.
